Fellsmere Reservoir Information
Headwaters, otherwise known as the Fellsmere Reservoir located near Fellesmere, Florida was a joint project between the St. Johns River Water Management District and the Florida Wildlife Commission. During this project, which spanned several years, 10,000 acres of land previously used for agriculture was transformed into an amazing, fish-producing, habitat.
Over a two-year period FWC fisheries biologists with the help of heavy equipment operators transformed thousands of acres of cow pastures and farm fields into an aquatic habitat. A labyrinth of holes, channels, and what may resemble winding creek channels were dug with heavy equipment. Many large mounds of dirt were created with the material that was dug from the ground. On many of these mounds Cypress trees were planted. After the area was flooded, this created multiple islands which added to Headwaters Lake’s beauty, while also providing habitat for birds and other animals. Water depths vary from 2 feet two as much as 30 feet deep.
Fellsmere Reservoir, has a variety of aquatic vegetation. As in many of Florida’s great bass fishing lakes cattails, lily pads, reeds, hydrilla and other vegetation abound. Large amounts of the aquatic vegetation and great variations in the water depth provide an enhanced habitat to the 1 million bass and 1 million pan fish stocked by FWC. Headwaters Lake is proving to be a bass factory. Early predictions from fisheries biologists suggests that Headwaters Lake could become the best Largemouth Bass fishery in the United States. Catches of over 100 bass in one day and trophy catches (bass over 8 pounds) have been reported.
Headwaters Lake is located in Indian River County, Florida near the cities of Vero Beach and Sebastian, and of course Fellsmere. These cities provide a home town feel with ample lodging and restaurants. Vero Beach and Sebastian are coastal towns with river front dinning and access to some of the most beautiful beaches on the Treasure Coast. Orlando attractions are close by as well (1 1/2 Hour drive).
